A. Bad breath is a common side effect whilst being in ketosis. Your body will expel ketones through urination, perspiration, and breathing and due to this you may notice a bad taste, sometimes described as a metallic taste in your mouth as well as bad breath. This is normal and expected. You can use breath sprays/strips to help but you must check they do not contain citric acid. More frequent teeth brushing will also help. You could chew fresh parsley or use a tongue scrape to help minimise this side effect too. You are also able to chew sugar free chewing gum for a minute to freshen your breath, but must dispose of it after the minute as chewing for any longer than this can make you hungrier as your digestion will be stimulated and be expecting food.
A. Hair loss is can be another side effect for some whilst on a VLCD, more often than not for those who have been on a low calorie diet over a long time period. Its not lasting and will go back to normal once you start to eat conventional foods again. You can take extra supplements to help with this if this is a problem. Silica supplements or food rich in silica like celery, green peppers, broccoli and spinach will all help.
A. If you are suffering with a common cold, flu, headache, sore throat whilst on plan you can take most over the counter tablet medication to help ease your symptoms. You will have to check they do not contain citric acid. You must avoid, cough syrups, lozenges, or lemsip drink formulas as these can all bring you out of ketosis. For sore throats you can use throat spray remedies providing they do not contain citric acid, or gargling with salt water or soluble aspirin can sometimes help. If symptoms persist for more than a couple of days we would always advise to seek profession medial help and possibly come off the plan until you are fully fit and well.
A. Constipation is a side effect for some whilst on a VLCD. This is due to the fact of a lot less food being passed through your system. You can buy over the counter remedies or look to increase your intake of green leafy vegetables (log within the meal planner to ensure you do not go over your allowance). If this is a persistent problem you must speak to your Doctor for advice.
You should also be aware you will not have the need to pass as much through your system as normal, it is not uncommon to only require to go once every few days once the plan is established, do to very little excess waste.
A. If you are suffering from diarrhoea this is more than likely to due to the high concentration of the vitamins and minerals in the packs, which for some, the body has difficulty tolerating. If this happens to you then we suggest drinking a glass of water before and after each pack to help with the digestion. If it persists for more than a couple of days it may not be due to the plan and you should seek medical advice.
